Sunday marked the conclusion of the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships hosted at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The renowned facility has once again proved why it’s earned the name of “TrackTown USA”. The competition drew in over 50,000 fans through the six (6) days of competition and it was the first time in history that the event was held on U.S. soil. The results did not disappoint.
The World Junior Championships is one of the IAAF’s most prestigious events; it provides a worldwide platform for the superstars of tomorrow to showcase their athletic prowess to a global audience. Over 1,700 athletes from 167 countries were invited to compete at this year’s meet. In a repeat of the 2012 Championship in Barcelona, the United States finished first with a total of 21 medals followed by Kenya with 16, and Ethiopia with 6. The full medal table can be found on the Championships’ website at http://ow.ly/zF5hl.
Regarded as one of the most prestigious tracks in the North America, Hayward Field showcases Beynon Sports’ revolutionary BSS 2000 Resurfacing System. The surface at TrackTown is finished with an embedded texture and was specifically engineered for speed and elite competitions.
Placed on the biggest stage, the track didn’t disappoint. A total of 129 records were broken throughout the competition! Most notably, Wilhem Belocian broke the World Junior Record and became the first junior athlete to ever run the 110m hurdles faster than 13 seconds with a time of 12.99! The second broken World Junior record belongs to Anežka Drahotová who finished the 10,000 Meters Race Walk with a remarkable time of 42:47.25. Trayvon Bromell sub ten (10) finish in the 100M sprint is still pending ratification due to wind assistance. The full list of broken records can be found on the Championships’ website at http://ow.ly/zFeRw.
“When we worked with Eugene on developing the best possible athletic surface we wanted to ensure that Hayward Field would be able to host major meets,” said Drew Beynon, Chief Operating Officer, Beynon Sports “Hayward Field has since hosted the 2008 US Olympic Trials, in addition to the 2009 and 2011 U.S. Outdoor Nationals, the 2010 Division I Track and Field Championships, the 2014 Prefontaine Classic and now the 2014 IAAF World Juniors. It truly proves that Beynon Sports is the surface of champions.”
