At the Surface of Atlantic Canada's New Giant Indoor Facility

The recently dubbed Irving Oil Field House in Saint John, New Brunswick, measures in as the largest field-house space in the province and one of the largest in Atlantic Canada. The private facility is operated by YMCA Canada and showcases a 200-metre indoor track, two 20,000 sq.ft indoor turf fields, a fitness center and change rooms.

Officials trusted Beynon Sports & Playteck Enterprises for the track surfacing. The facility was designed and engineered by Murdock Boyd Architects and built in collaboration with Lindsay Construction.

“When it came to our choice of track surface, we compared numerous systems & providers and truly felt Beynon Sports & Playteck Enterprises were the best solution for our project” said Bill MacMackin, President of The Greater Saint John Field House project. “We’re really impressed with the durability and performance of the current outdoor Playteck surface at UNBSJ (University of New Brunswick, Saint John Campus) and when we spoke with other Playteck surface owners, they echoed our sentiments. We already have numerous events scheduled in 2019 / 2020 and are excited by the opportunities this opens up for the local community and City of Saint John.

The track showcases a six-lane oval and eight-lane straightaway with a complex alternating blue color lane design which is rapidly becoming a new trend in track layouts. This execution requires an experienced team due to the complex nature of the polyurethane installation.

“Worldwide, Beynon Sports is renowned for excellence. We are ecstatic and honored to be the trusted surface of the Irving Oil Field House.” Said John Beynon, President, Beynon Sports. “To be selected by elite Municipalities, Universities and Private facilities time and time again in Canada is a testament to our and Playteck’s commitment to quality."

The BSS 300 system is a dual-durometer sandwich product that features paved-in-place polyurethane, topped with a two-component seal coat and finished with a flow-applied layer of two-component polyurethane. This system adds a touch of performance and feel underfoot, especially for long-distance runners. The surface features Beynon’s exclusive Hobart texture, engineered to limit EPDM migration and deliver an unmatched performance experience.

The complex is planned to officially open on November 9th, 2019.
