Beynon & Middlebury College Take Home Grand ASBA Award

The Middlebury College Panthers kicked off their track season boasting numerous first-place performances on their new state-of-the-art Beynon track at the Middlebury Classic this month.

But the team’s success is not limited to just their athletic performances. The school’s newly constructed Virtue Field House recently received the “Outstanding Indoor Track & Field Facility-of-the-Year” Award by the ASBA (American Sports Builders Association).

The ASBA, the national organization for builders and suppliers of materials for athletic facilities, annually present the awards to facilities built by ASBA members that exemplify construction excellence. Presentation of award plaques was made at the Technical Meeting, recently held in Amelia Island, Florida.

At over 110,000 square feet, the Virtue Field House is nearly twice the size of Middlebury’s previous indoor athletic facility and is anchored with a top-of-the-line, NCAA-standard 200-meter indoor track by Beynon Sports. The track boasts nine 60-meter sprint lanes, a dedicated area for high, long jump, pole vault and throwing.

Early on, Middlebury College selected Beynon Sports’ BSS 3000 system with Beynon’s trademarked Hobart Texture. The BSS 3000 is the highest performing athletic surface provided in the sports and athletic surfacing market today. The BSS 3000 sports surface is fast, efficiently converting impact energy into kinetic energy, and leading to faster times. The innovative gel technology produces an ultra soft elastomer with viscoelastic behavior that allows for superior shock absorbing properties and the surface is the most eco-conscious surface offered at this time.

Known for being as good on race day as it is for training, Beynon surfaces are found in high profile indoor track and field venues across the country including Boston University, Liberty University, Virginia Military Institute, the University of Iowa, the University of Kansas, Yale University, Saginaw Valley State University, the University of South Dakota, and the SPIRE Institute.

The Middlebury design team aimed to create a facility that visually and functionally departs from the limitations of traditional buildings, leaving Middlebury flexible and well-positioned to be able to host regional and NCAA indoor track and field events for the first time in history. The new field house was designed to be a flexible space, suitable for training and competition, yet also be able to hold up to 5,000 for large campus functions and assemblies.
