Clark Field, home of the Coe College Kohawks track teams, underwent a large-scale renovation project starring a new Beynon Sports track surface.
Improvements to the track & field facility is the first stage of a multi-million dollar Athletic and Recreation Complex Project planned for Coe College over the next few years.
A major part of the upgrades is the new track surface. Coe College officials opted for Beynon’s BSS 1000 – 13mm system. The full pour polyurethane surface allows athletes to perform at their highest levels; both for training and competition. The track’s bio-engineered force reduction layer integrates very fine SBR rubber granules with environmentally friendly polyurethane to create an impermeable shock-absorbing cushion. The durable surface is designed to resist the toughest weather and competition.
"The new track surface and facility improvements for field events provide Coe athletes with a first-rate facility for decades to come," said Athletics Director John Chandler. "These enhancements demonstrate Coe's continuing commitment to provide top-quality facilities for our student-athletes and a welcoming environment for Kohawk supporters."
Beynon’s BSS 1000 system is one of the most popular track surfaces in the NCAA and is locally showcased at the University of Dubuque, Grinnell College, Luther College and now Coe College.
Beynon Sports has over 1,500 installations worldwide in the past ten (10) years and over 40 years’ experience in the renovation and new construction of sports facilities. Beynon is the leading manufacturer of Class I IAAF Certified surfaces (the highest track certification) in the United States: Hayward Field (OR), University of Kansas – Rock Chalk Park (KS), Auburn University (AL) and University of Texas at San Antonio (TX).
More Improvements
Two large sections of bleachers were added to accommodate Kohawk fans, creating 500 additional seats -- increasing spectator capacity by 50 percent on the “home” side of the stadium. The field will also be enclosed by a new fence to provide better control of the facility, complete with a perimeter sidewalk. And, to enhance track and field competition, the Clark Field project also includes a new long jump/triple jump runway, a new "D" zone for high jump and pole vault, and a new hammer/discus cage and throwing area. New hurdles, high jump pads and meet management equipment also complement the facilities project.
More on Coe College
Coe College is a private, nationally recognized four-year liberal arts institution in the heart of the Midwest. The Coe campus nestled in Cedar Rapids - Iowa's second largest city - has doubled in size in recent years.
On the heels of these renovations came the restructuring of the cross country and track & field coaching staffs, consolidating both teams under one program structure. Current head track and field coach Aaron Carley will remain in that role, while also serving as director of the cross country and track and field programs.
"Overall, the goal is to manage the growth and development of the cross country and track and field programs into highly competitive teams in the Iowa Conference,” Carley said.
