Southern Illinois University officially broke ground on the new Saluki Track and Field Complex on May 23rd with a December 2011 completion date scheduled for the $3.96 million project.
Southern Illinois University will now have a Track and Field Facility befitting of a school that has such a rich tradition in collegiate track and field competition. Throughout their history, the Southern Illinois University Track and Field program has produced 17 Olympians, 13 national champions and 125 All-Americans.
“I arrived here 21 years ago and I am just so proud to be part of this university,” said SIU track coach Connie Price-Smith. “I wish my teammates that were with me could see what we have now. If you could see where we came from and what we had and what we have now and where we can go, it’s just an extremely exciting time to be part of SIU athletics.”
The new facility will include a Beynon Sports Surfaces 400-meter track with the state-of-the-art BSS 2000 full pour polyurethane track system in addition to accommodations for NCAA competition field and throwing events.
“We are ecstatic to be able to partner with SIU and their storied history in the sport. The BSS 2000 track and field surface will provide the perfect balance between training and competing while continuing to allow the Saluki athletes to set records” said Drew Beynon, Chief Operating Officer Beynon Sports Surfaces.
It is an exciting time to see what the athletes of SIU will be able to accomplish with the new facility.
“When we have our new facility I am looking forward to bigger and better things” Connie Price-Smith
Current Saluki runner Jeff Schrimer adds “I have no doubt this new facility will help the track and field program continue to reach its goals of not only being the best team in the MVC, but also continue leaving a Saluki footprint on the national stage”
