Beynon Sports the Surface of Choice for Division III Indoor Track and Field Nationals

Grinnell College will showcase their state-of-the-art Beynon Sports’ athletic surface when they host the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House on March 9th-10th.

What started out as nothing more than a rudimentary drawing on a napkin over a cup of coffee between Russell Osgood, the President of Grinnell at the time, and Head Track Coach Will Freeman has blossomed into an event that not only Grinnell College can be proud of, but the entire community of Grinnell, Iowa.

The national meet is expected to bring upwards of 500 athletes representing an estimated 80 schools.

“It’s not just a feather in the cap to the school but it’s a chance to bring people to Iowa.” Freeman said “It’s not too often that Iowa gets these kinds of things”

  • The Beynon surface, which was installed in September 2010, features:

  • Six-lane 200-meter track with eight-lane straightaway

  • State-of-the-art BSS 1000 13mm with Hobart Texture

  • Triple jump, long jump, high jump, and pole vault runways

  • Shot put and weight throw areas

  • Four competition/recreational tennis courts within the track

What makes the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships unique is that Grinnell placed the bid to host the National Championships before the fieldhouse was even completed. The bid itself was based on the drawings and renderings with the emphasis on what was to come, with stiff competition from schools that had just finished new facilities. Grinnell knew they had to select a company with a reputation for getting things done on time and under budget, while providing an athletic surface that allowed their athletes to train and compete with a reduced risk of injury. With over 155 NCAA installations to our credit, Beynon Sports was the obvious choice.

“We couldn’t be more pleased that Grinnell College will get the chance to show off their state-of-the-art Beynon surface at the National Championships” Bill Teten, Regional Sales Manager, Beynon Sports “Grinnell has a great athletics program and Beynon Sports is thrilled that we could partner with such an outstanding institution for what will surely be a monumental event.”
