Beynon's Hobart texture shines at Mount Holyoke College's busy indoor sports complex

Standing three stories high, the Mount Holyoke Field House covers an important acre of the campus in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

A central part of student life, the multipurpose athletic space features six tennis courts surrounded by a three-lane, 200-meter track. It is not only a venue for varsity and club teams, but is also an essential space for physical education classes throughout the year. It also serves as the indoor back-up site for the College’s Commencement ceremonies; holding up to 4,000 guests at a time.

To say the least, this space must perform at peak levels round-the-clock, day in and out. That is where Beynon Sports came in.

Sharing one surface poses a challenge in meeting the needs of a multi-use space -- a common theme for University field houses and one Beynon addresses regularly. Last year, Mount Holyoke’s administration set-out to upgrade the hybrid flooring to the best multi-sport indoor floor system on the market: Beynon’s exclusive Hobart texture surface.

The transformation took place as the surface was removed from the previously worn and hardened courts, followed by a leveling of the old asphalt underneath, before the install of the new surface. The final product is a system for significantly improved performance for all athlete types.

Prior to Beynon’s latest install, the Mount Holyoke indoor track surface did not allow for track spikes. The college needed the floor space to be more resilient and adaptable for a multitude of activities and events. The Beynon upgrade transformed the track, which shares flooring with tennis courts, into a spike-friendly track. A true multi-sport space.

The building is also used as space by a number of other groups on campus, while also serving as the longtime home of the United States Gymnastics Camp.

Located in South Hadley, Massachusetts, Mount Holyoke College is a highly selective women’s college and the upgrade to top-of-the-line Beynon surface will ensure Mount Holyoke athletics and academics will continue to train, compete and host on the best multi-sport surface available for decades to come.
