Fordham University Resurfaces Track at Vincent T. Lombardi Center

Tucked away in the north Bronx Rose Hill Campus, you will find Fordham University’s cutting-edge Beynon Sports indoor track surface in the refurbished Vincent T. Lombardi Fieldhouse.

The campus is as idyllic as college campuses get: 85 acres featuring Gothic architecture and tree-lined walkways.

The relationship between Fordham and Beynon is a longstanding one - Beynon installed the original fieldhouse track nearly two decades ago.

Built in 1976, the facility is named in honor of Vincent Lombardi who was a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well as Fordham student athlete and trustee. The fieldhouse contains a 220-yard, four lane, 220-meter indoor running track, long jump pit, pole vault pit and high-jump.

After 18 years of use, Beynon’s original track surface was due for restoration. The BSS 2000 Resurfacing System transformed the surface from old to new, by not only updating the appearance but improving training safety and speed for athletes.

One major visible difference to all who visit the fieldhouse is the iconic shade of maroon on the new track.

“This is a deeper richer color of maroon than the former track,” said Beynon Indoor Sales Manager, Tom Mitchell. “We’ve gotten better with the color over the years and maroon is a real rich color . . . we do a good job of making it pop.”

The new track also provides a much more cushioned feel underfoot for athletes, as the new floor is 60% thicker: 21 mm vs 13 mm in the original.

A multi-sport, smooth texture infield was also refurbished, for a variety of recreational activities.

The refurbishing process is roughly half the cost of building a track from scratch - for any university - due to the opportunity to utilize an existing surface as a platform.

With the upgrade to a high caliber track, Fordham has the opportunity to elevate its already impressive indoor track program for at least another two decades.
