A mere 10 days after shattering the 5000 meter U.S. indoor record, Galen Rupp was back at Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center to challenge the two-mile indoor record. With one lap remaining, the capacity crowd cheered the rock star of track as he propelled himself through the last turns at impressive speeds. With a final time of 8:07.41, Rupp was able to reclaim the U.S. indoor two-mile record and come within 3 seconds of the World Record! Both of Rupp’s record breaking races were held on BU’s 200-meter indoor Beynon track. Dubbed the “Launching Pad”, the indoor facility at Boston University is renowned for unbelievably fast times. Even legendary marathoner Alberto Salazar told Here&Now.com
“’I think it’s an illegally fast track. If you’re going to go for records, this is the place to go’”.
Designed with a unique banked board curve and constructed with Beynon Sports’ revolutionary BSS 2000 surfacing system, Boston University’s TTC track was finished with a specialized Hobart encapsulated texture – providing an unparalleled venue for speed. Engineered to meet the intense demands of competition, the IAAF certified Track has been the home of the BU Terriers since 2010.
Rupp hasn’t finished with the launch pad just yet though; On February 15th, he will attempt to break the Indoor 1 Mile World Record. The goal…surpass Hicham El Guerrouj’s time of 3:48.45 which has been standing strong for over 15 years!
Will Rupp and the Launching Pad be able to continue their streak and break 3 records in 3 races?
