Local Track Facility Rivals the NCAA’s Best Venues

Odds are that you’ve never heard of Spearville. This small Kansas town, 150 miles west of Wichita, is home to less than a 1,000 residents. However, during the summer of 2016, this proud community undertook a monumental renovation of their local track facility.

This small town story isn’t notable because of the funds raised or the incredible support of the boosters. Rather, this is a story about how an entire community decided to go above and beyond to provide their local students with access to the best running surface on the market.

Spearville opted to install a premium track at their local High School that will rival the best complexes in the world - at professional or collegiate level. As a result, Spearville will have a track facility that lasts twice as long, with lower lifecycle costs than any other community in the area.

“Through the generosity of a local foundation and the support of the community, we were able to install this high-end track and select the long lasting Beynon BSS 1000 system and Post-Tensioned Concrete subbase,” said Mr. Daryl Stegman, Spearville School District’s Superintendent.

And, just as the town of Spearville teamed with the school to renovate the Lancers’ track, Beynon Sports teamed with Renner Sports, a Beynon Sports company, to install this state-of-the-art surface.

The collaboration was the first time a full pour, polyurethane Beynon surface was installed over Renner’s post-tensioned concrete (PTC) subbase. This combination with provide optimal athletic performance with unmatched durability. Featuring a life cycle of nearly 50 years, Renner Sports’ PTC subbase can last nearly three times longer than an asphalt base for a minimal increase in cost.

“Beynon provided several options for our district to choose from and our final decision was to convert the original 6-lane track to 8-lanes with a superior concrete base,” Stegman said.

While the Spearville community has made the upfront investment for this superior surface, the facility will keep performing for decades to come. Requiring only minor repairs every 10 years, this track not only saves money, but also time. Additionally, advancements in technology have lowered the initial installation costs, making it a viable option for more teams across the globe.

The Post-Tensioned concrete Track at Spearville will resist cracking, remain resilient and allow for superior water drainage. The embedded post-tensioned cables assures proper slope and compression for young athletes so they can train safely and run competitively. The Lancers made an informed choice.

“It is our mission to support schools who are looking for the best solution for their students and community,” said John Beynon, President of Beynon Sports.

Beynon works on projects large and small across North America. The company has installed over 1,600 successful projects and continues to develop and improve track surface systems for athletes every year.
