Middlebury College sets the bar with Virtue Field House

The recently completed Virtue Field House at Middlebury College has clearly set the standard for field house construction on the East Coast.

At over 110,000 square feet, the Virtue Field House is nearly twice the size of Middlebury’s previous indoor athletic facility. The building features a new entry plaza, NCAA-standard 200-meter indoor track by Beynon Sports, jumping and throwing area, and 21,000 square feet of multipurpose athletic offices, collaboration space, and men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Middlebury College selected Beynon Sports’ BSS 3000 system with Beynon’s trademarked Hobart Texture for their new track surface. The BSS 3000 is the highest performing athletic surface provided in the sports and athletic surfacing market today. Not only is the BSS 3000 best-in-class in terms of resiliency and feel under foot, but unlike other full pour track surfaces, the BSS 3000 contains no SBR, making it the safest surface offered by sports surfacing providers. The BSS 3000 sports surface is fast, efficiently converting impact energy into kinetic energy, and leading to faster times. The innovative gel technology produces an ultra soft elastomer with viscoelastic behavior that allows for superior shock absorbing properties and the surface is the most eco-conscious surface offered today. In fact, approximately 300,000 pounds of carbon dioxide is prevented from entering the atmosphere when installing the BSS 3000 system versus a standard full pour track system.

For the first time in its history, Middlebury College will be able to host regional and NCAA indoor track meets, thanks to the new NCAA-standard surface. The new facility showcases a 200-meter six-lane track with nine 60-meter sprint lanes and dedicated areas for high jump, long jump, pole vault, and throwing.

Known for being as good on race day as it is for training, Beynon surfaces are found in high profile indoor track and field venues across the country such as Boston University, the University of Kansas, Yale University, Saginaw Valley State University, the University of South Dakota, and the SPIRE Institute.
