Two more school records fell and four All-East citations went to the Bison as Bucknell track and field wrapped up competition at the ECAC and IC4A Championships at Boston University on Sunday. Caroline Tolli broke her second program record of the year with a third-place finish in the mile, while the men’s 4x400 relay knocked two more seconds off its record that lasted less than 24 hours. The Bison men tied for 15th in the team standings while the women were 24th.
After seeing her 1,000-meter record fall to Hana Casalnova and Beth Braunegg yesterday, Tolli inked her name atop the record lists in a different event on Sunday, clocking in at 4:49.99 in the mile. The new record topped Julie Sweitzer’s mark of 4:52.41, which had stood since 1997. The time was also nine seconds faster than Tolli’s previous personal best.
Casalnova and Braunegg made it three All-East honors for the Bucknell women with their finishes in the 1,000 meter final. Casalnova was third in 2:52.97, while Braunegg took eighth with a time of 2:54.43. Both broke the Bucknell record in yesterday’s prelims with Casalnova leading the way in 2:49.81.
Tolli, Casalnova and Braunegg are the first Bison to earn All-East honors in an individual track event since 2007 when Erin Cranmer-Hart was fourth in the mile and Christa Sawko placed third in the 800. Casalnova and Braunegg are also the first Bison to be recognized in the 1,000 since Gena Korrell in 1989.
In two days of competition, the Bucknell women have reset the program standard in four events. In addition to the middle distance runners, Kim Nagotko now has the No. 1 time in the 200 meters (24.65) and the 4x400 relay ranks first as well (3:46.28). Jennifer Zymet also broke the previous 200-meter record but still ranks second behind Nagotko (24.89).
The Bucknell men put up similar results with Christian Lupica breaking records in the 200 and with the 4x400 on Saturday. That relay, which ran 3:14.02 in yesterday’s prelims, improved its time to 3:12.38 in Sunday’s final. The quartet of Kevin Tapper, Anthony Menza, Jacob Eaton Hall and Lupica placed seventh in the field on Sunday to claim their own set of All-East honors.
In Sunday’s field events, the men’s shot put was highlighted by an 11th-place finish for Luke Webster. The senior finished with a marl of 52-7 ½. Stephen Koullias, Jack Fellows and Quinten Marcott were also among the top 30. Olivia Massey took 15th in the long jump (17-11 ¾) as well.
In the final standings, the Bucknell men totaled 20 points, tying them with Monmouth and Dartmouth for 15th in a field of 44 teams. Connecticut earned the title with 104 points. On the women’s side, Bucknell was 24th out of 53 teams with 13 points. The Huskies won that title as well with 60.5 points.
Bucknell’s indoor season is now complete. The Bison will be back in action for the outdoor spring season beginning March 30 at the UMBC Invitational.
