The 2021 Canada Games are coming to Brock University and its new Canada Games Park — a community athletics complex that will host a variety of sporting events, including track and field, during the country’s premier two-week showcase for young athletes. All track events at the new facility will be raced on a new Beynon surface which will include a warmup track within the new state-of-the-art facility. The track & field facilities’ design and construction is led by the consortium of Ritchfield Inc, Playteck Enterprises and The MBTW Group.
Officials awarded the $90 million design/build contract of the track facilities after profound research into the optimal surfacing and construction options available in the market. The venues are part of larger project that will result in the construction of the primary venues for the 2021 Canada Games: Canada Games Park and the Royal Henley Rowing Centre in Port Dalhousie. Both are considered legacy projects and are expected to serve the Niagara Region for decades to come. Brock and its partners — the City of St. Catharines, the City of Thorold and the Niagara Region — will own the facility, and the university will operate it in cooperation with both cities.
Canada Games Park, which broke ground in December 2019 on the Brock University campus, will host the wrestling, beach volleyball, volleyball, box lacrosse and track & field events. Brock University will host the athletes’ village, which is expected to house 5,000 athletes, coaches, managers and technical support staff. The Beynon tracks are slated for installation in May 2020.
The outdoor track which is planned to be certified World Athletics (formerly IAAF) Class II will feature Beynon’s most popular surface, the BSS 1000 with Hobart Texture. It offers a bio-engineered force-reduction layer integrated with fine SBR rubber granules to create an impermeable shock-absorbing cushion. Part of Beynon’s performance line, the system delivers optimal shock absorbency and superior energy return.
The 200-meter indoor track will feature Beynon’s leading indoor system, the BSS 1000 with Hobart Texture, which delivers exceptional shock absorption with a tunable force-reduction layer. Engineered to eliminate EPDM granule migration, Hobart Texture™ locks the granules with an exclusive binder and water-based aliphatic coating.
“It’s fitting that Canada’s finest athletes will be competing on Beynon surfaces,” said John Beynon, founder of Beynon Sports. “Just as they’ve trained for years to be the best in their sport, we’ve strived for more than four decades to provide the safest and highest-performing running surface in the world. We’re proud to be a part of the 2021 Canada Games.”
Beynon has been the trusted surface of numerous elite venues: U.S. Olympic Trials, Canadian Championships, World Indoor Championships, World Junior Championships, NCAA Division I, II & III Championships, Prefontaine Classic and more.
“As a leading provider of track surfaces in Canada and a longtime Beynon partner, we’re thrilled to be part of such an important national event,” added Mathieu Auffrey, president of Playteck Enterprises, which represents Beynon in Canada.
Playteck has been installing, innovating and transforming the Canadian track market over the past 30 years. Playteck is the trusted partner of the Irving Oil Field House, Cape Breton University, the Gordie Howe Sports Complex, the University of Alberta, the University of Manitoba and countless other collegiate and municipal projects across Canada.
