Tigers run wild in Memphis

There’s a new running track at the University of Memphis and it is amazing. Faced with the challenge of installing a new NCAA regulation soccer pitch inside the track at the Billy J. Murphy Complex, Memphis officials turned to Beynon Sports to completely redesign and build a new track and field facility for their student athletes.

Beynon Sports’ specialized team of technicians broke ground on the project in June 2013, digging deep to the bottom of the soil, and restoring the concrete subbase and installing new asphalt. Given the challenging site plan and building constraints, the complexity of this project was greater than usual, but Beynon Sports was able to draw from their considerable expertise in site construction and track design to provide the school with both a new natural grass soccer field and a mammoth 10,000 square yard track.

For this project, the University of Memphis opted for Beynon Sports’ IAAF Certified BSS 1000 full pour track and field surfacing system. Renowned for allowing athletes to push their limits, the BSS 1000 offers proven durability with a specialized feel under foot. Its bio-engineered force reduction layer integrates very fine SBR rubber granules with environmentally-friendly polyurethane to create an impermeable shock absorbing cushion.

The Billy J. Murphy Track Complex will now feature a nine-lane track, two 30' hammer discus cages, four pole vault runways & two long jump pits. With the Memphis Invitational taking place on March 29th, The Tigers won’t have to wait long to test out their new track!
