University of Louisville Transforms “Cardinal Park” to First Class, Track-Only Facility

February 18, 2016, LOUISVILLE, KY - When the University of Louisville opened their premier Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Soccer Stadium in 2014, the Cardinal track and field program was able to spread its wings within the former soccer and track complex known as Cardinal Park.

University of Louisville’s administration now had the opportunity to transform Cardinal Park into a premier, “track-only” complex for Men’s and Women’s Track and Field programs.

But first, some major upgrades had to be made, as the facility and track were nearing 15 years old. After extensive research, the University of Louisville’s athletic administration opted to resurface the existing surface with Beynon Sports’ BSS 2000RE system finished with their exclusive Hobart Texture.

Beynon’s revolutionary resurfacing system, the BSS 2000RE, restores the appearance and texture of aged tracks at a fraction of the cost of a new surface. A leveling layer and textured wear coat are applied to the previous surface resulting in significant improvements to the existing force reduction, resiliency, feel under foot and appearance. Beynon’s team installed the surface on the Cardinals’ existing nine-lane, 400 meter, NCAA-Certified track; including the competition areas for pole vault, long jump, shot put, discus, hammer throw, javelin and triple jump. The full pour polyurethane Beynon surface has superior resiliency with improved shock absorbency. The BSS 2000RE Resurfacing System not only improves aesthetics, but brings existing track surfaces to back within IAAF performance parameters.

Timing and budget were also major considerations for the University of Louisville’s administration.

“The [Beynon] team had a small window in which to install the track, and not only did they meet those scheduling deadlines, but they gave us exactly what we thought we were going to get,” said Josh Heird, University of Louisville’s Assistant Athletic Director.

Cardinal Park stands on the forefront of athletic facilities and serves both the University and the surrounding community. The lighted track and field stadium provides bleacher seating for approximately 2,200 fans and is complete with locker rooms, a fully equipped training room and a climate-controlled press box.

“The ability of [Beynon] to install a “first-class” surface has helped us tremendously as we continue to turn Cardinal Park into a track-only facility,” Heard said. “The University of Louisville continues its quest to be the premier athletic department in the country, and when we partnered with Beynon Sports to resurface Cardinal Park, we took another step in achieving that goal.”
