University of Manitoba prepares for National Championships with new Beynon track

In preparation of hosting the 2019 USports National Championships, the University of Manitoba recently completed the resurfacing of the track surface at James Daly Fieldhouse. The university trusted the team of Beynon Sports and Playteck Enterprises for the site overhaul.

The University of Manitoba opted for the BSS 2000 system with Hobart texture for the new surface. The facility showcases a 6-lane, 200-meter, high-performance banked track with 10 infield lanes on a sprint straightaway. It is one of only a few indoor banked tracks in Canada.

“The track is known to be one of the top tracks in the province and country, but the resurfacing has immediately elevated its status to a premier showcase for the country’s best amateur athletes, “said Simon Wang, Director of Facilities for University of Manitoba.

The University will host the 2019 USports Track & Field Championships.

“We’re honored to work with Playteck on another prestigious track in Canada,” said John Beynon, President of Beynon Sports. “We’ve seen record performances at numerous NCAA and IAAF championship events on Beynon tracks across North America and we expect to see some fast times during the 2019 National Championships.”

Other upgrades include the addition of two sprint lanes outside of the oval and a warm-up lane outside of the oval.

“I want to express our immense appreciation for the outstanding work that was done by Playteck and Beynon. Their expertise, professionalism, and attention to detail were evident throughout the project,” said Wang. “That was very important to us - we wanted to work with a superior team to install a superior product.”

The 60,000 square foot facility was built in 1981 and houses the province’s only indoor banked track. The track infield is used for tennis, soccer and other collegiate sports. All line and event markings conform with IAAF Track and Field specifications. The total project cost nearly $1M and was funded by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba.
